House passes FCAT bill, with foreign language add
Published on April 30, 2008
The House just passed Sen. Don Gaetz’s popular bill to include measures other than FCAT scores to calculate high school grades (SB 1908.)
But now the Senate will have to consider the House’s lengthy additions to it.
House leaders amended one of Marco Rubio’s favorite bills, having to do with creating more rigorous curriculum standards, onto the bill.
They also added a late amendment by Rep. Maria Sachs, D-Delray Beach, that would allow schools to deem an educator “certified” if the teacher passes foreign language tests identified by the state, or if the teacher passes muster with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
Rep. Joe Pickens, R-Palatka, asked Sachs if Gaetz liked the amendment and she said she had not spoken with him about it.
Pickens said the curriculum additions, at least, were expected to be passed in the Senate.
